Shanta Gokhale is a writer, translator, cultural critic and theatre historian.
She writes in English and Marathi. She has published two novels in Marathi, Rita Welinkar and Tya Varshi. Both won the Maharashtra State award for the best novel
of the year. The first novel was recently adapted as a film, Rita by her daughter Renuka Shahane. She
has written numerous scripts for documentary, corporate and feature films, some
of which have won national awards.
Shanta has also written columns for Mid-Day, The Times of India, Loksatta
and Saptahik Sakal. She has been
writing a fortnightly column on culture for Mumbai
Mirror for five years.
