Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay
Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay (1903–1988) was an Indian social reformer, freedom fighter, and cultural thinker who played a significant role in India’s independence movement and in shaping the country’s post-independence cultural institutions. Actively involved in the freedom struggle, she worked alongside prominent leaders of the time and was known for her advocacy of social justice, women’s rights, and civil liberties. Beyond her political engagement, Chattopadhyay made enduring contributions to the revival and promotion of Indian handicrafts, handlooms, and indigenous art traditions. She was instrumental in establishing key cultural and craft institutions that supported artisans and preserved traditional knowledge systems at a time of rapid social change. A prolific writer and thinker, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay documented India’s social, cultural, and political transitions with clarity and conviction. Her work continues to be valued for its insight into nationalism, culture, and community life in modern India.
