Julia Hegewald

Julia Hegewald is a German art historian and Indologist specialising in the visual cultures of South Asia and Southeast Asia. She is a Professor of Indian Art History at the University of Bonn, Germany, where her research focuses on temple architecture, sculpture, ritual space, and the relationship between art and religious practice. Her scholarship has examined Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain art traditions, with particular attention to how architecture and iconography function within lived religious environments. Through fieldwork, archival research, and interdisciplinary study, she has contributed to a deeper understanding of how sacred spaces are designed, used, and experienced across South and Southeast Asia. Hegewald has authored and edited several academic volumes and research studies that are widely used in the fields of art history, Indology, and Asian studies, establishing her as a respected voice in the study of Asian visual and religious culture.
