315.00

The Ghost of Gosain Bagan is a lively and unusual ghost story that blends humour, adventure, and suspense. The story centres on Burun, a young boy whose life seems to collapse after he scores a miserable thirteen marks in mathematics. Mocked by classmates and weighed down by disappointment, Burun wanders into the mysterious Gosain Bagan, a place surrounded by whispers of ghosts and eerie happenings.

Instead of encountering terror, Burun meets Nidhiram—a ghost who is determined to frighten him. Yet Burun refuses to be scared. What begins as a strange encounter soon turns into an unlikely friendship between boy and ghost. Together, they stumble into a whirlwind of adventures involving the cunning Habu, a local goonda who has turned himself into a tantrik, as well as a threatened grandfather and a series of surprising events that lead Burun back to school with newfound courage.

Written by Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay, this beloved story overturns the conventions of the horror genre. Rather than focusing on fear alone, it celebrates bravery, wit, and imagination. With eccentric characters, comic situations, and moments of unexpected heroism, the book offers young readers a thrilling yet warm-hearted tale in which courage triumphs over fear.

Why Should a Child Read This Book?

  • This story speaks directly to children who have experienced failure, embarrassment, or self-doubt. Burun’s struggle after performing poorly in school is something many young readers can understand. His encounter with a ghost transforms what could have been a moment of defeat into an adventure filled with laughter and courage.
  • The book also presents ghosts in a playful and imaginative way. Instead of being frightening, the ghost Nidhiram becomes a companion who helps Burun grow braver and more confident. This refreshing twist makes the story both entertaining and comforting for young readers.
  • Written by the celebrated Bengali writer Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay and brought into English through translation, the book also introduces children to a much-loved classic of Indian storytelling, allowing them to encounter a distinctive voice from regional literature.

  6. The story offers young readers a gateway to the imaginative world created by Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay, an important figure in modern Bengali literature.

How to Use This Book

  1. Discussions about failure and resilience After reading the story, adults can ask children how Burun felt after receiving poor marks and what helped him regain confidence. This can help normalize conversations around academic pressure and disappointment.
  2. Exploring humour in ghost stories Teachers and librarians can discuss how this story differs from typical horror tales. Children can compare frightening ghosts in other stories with the humorous character of Nidhiram.
  3. Creative storytelling activities Encourage children to invent their own unusual ghost characters—perhaps ghosts that are shy, clumsy, or friendly. This helps them use imagination while rethinking common story tropes.
  4. Reading Indian classics in translation Educators can introduce the idea that many wonderful stories originate in different Indian languages and reach new readers through translation.
  5. Classroom debates or writing prompts Students can write about what they would do if they met a ghost like Nidhiram, or how they might deal with a challenge similar to Burun’s.
  6. Encourage independent reading With its mix of humour, adventure, and supernatural elements, the book is well suited to spark interest among young readers who are beginning to read longer stories independently.
