India is a land of storytellers and behind every Indian festival there’s a fascinating fable. Onam, the state festival of Kerala, celebrates the legend of King Mahabali who was known to be a just, generous and kind ruler of his people. This attracted the attention of the gods, as Mahabali was an asura (demon) who had become too powerful, and Lord Vishnu came down to earth to restore balance, in his fifth avatar—a dwarf Brahmin called Vamana.
